Notes from My Book Marketing Meeting

I recently spent the day in New York City where I had lunch with Penny Sansevieri of Author Marketing Experts. Penny and her team will take on the next phase of marketing for my book, Doing Business By the Book, while I work with clients and teach the “Business Book Bootcamp” starting next month. (By the way, I have just 3 spots available in my Private Book Coaching program. If you prefer to work with me one-on-one, go here now to learn more. Otherwise you’ll probably have to wait until late summer or early fall to get on my schedule.) Since I feel my experience is, or will be, your experience as a book author, I think it’s important to share with you some of the tips I picked up in our conversation.
**When Your Book Comes Out, Think Bigger
I like to think I do think big, but as I described my thoughts about pursuing speaking engagements in the coming year, Penny suggested I go beyond small, monthly group meetings. She reminded me that my book and its success puts me at a new level where I can pursue gigs at marketing conferences, especially for entrepreneurs and professionals such as lawyers and doctors.
**Go Beyond the Usual Magazines
Everyone wants to be in the national publications but, depending on your audience, you could get more from being featured in or writing an article for a regional business publication or an in-flight magazine.
**Ads Don’t Always Work
I know it looks great to open the Times and see a big photo of someone’s book, but how many times does an ad like that lead to a sale? That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t advertise, just be smart about it. If it’s an ad in an email newsletter where the readers regular act on the content in it, that’s a great place to be seen. If it’s an ad in a medium that will be folded up and forgotten, you might want to rethink that investment.
I hope this helps! Remember, always think about who you want to reach and how you can reach them in large numbers. That will always be your fastest path to doing well.
